I seems no matter what size PC screen is used, the forum only takes up the middle of the screen with HUGE margins on both sides. (using the background colour, or image if there is one)

example - this very smfhelper forum.

This contrasts with the 2.0 forums where the forum width adjust so it fits most of the screen,
example - https://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?action=forum

Is this a feature / problem with 2.1 generally?
If so has it been noted on github?
Is there some other way to fix it?

The setting for forum width was taken out a while back in 2.1 if I remember right. THere should be a mod lyin around to put it back in though if it has been updated. I here what you are saying though. It would be nice to have it auto-resize.

You need to adjust the code style in index.css, line: 1081.

#top_section .inner_wrap, #wrapper, #header, #footer .inner_wrap {
    max-width: 1200px;
    margin: 0 auto;
    width: 90%;

Adjust this part to your liking:
max-width: 1200px;

The mod is called "Forum width setting":

https://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=4223

It works fine with default theme, but not sure to work with custom themes.

Bigguy

I installed it today. Might play around a bit later with it. :rgton

Seems pretty narrow on my laptop screen if I'm being honest. Maybe 90% would work better.

Hmmm...No, I don't think 90% will work. To much space to the right of everything really. 80% maybe...

Look better now on my laptop screen, sorta back to how it used to look.  Think it need some sort of max width setting so it doesn't go silly wide on big screens but also doesn't go too narrow on smaller device screens like tablets or notebooks / laptops etc.

Bigguy

I wonder if this effects mobile at all. Probably not.

Don't think it does, if I zoom in on my laptop browser (EDGE) everything switches to full width.  ;)

LandyVlad

It's the look of the old forum width I'm after - less úser shock' on transition to 2.1
I think that 2300px?
