This is the other site that was owned by the person who owned the seniors forum I previously mentioned. This was the first site I got involved with - a person I knew from SMF (TehCraw for those who know him) was a member of this forum and got in touch with me to help get them upgraded from YaBB SE to SMF in 2004. There's not a lot to see here at the moment, but I plan to revamp the site some in the future - at the very least replacing the dated static website with a portal (probably TP due to its advanced articles system) and move the forum out to the main directory (instead of /community where it currently resides).

Main site: https://www.christianphotographers.com
Forum: https://www.christianphotographers.com/community

I've seen that name a number of times before (TehCraw). I'm an amateur photographer but, sadly, I haven't been keeping up with it lately. :(

Yes, the static page needs updating. The news slider makes the page jump due to the various heights of the slider content.

Bigguy

Yeah that static page REALLY needs updated. I didn't notice any jumping but I was not there long either.

Scroll down near the bottom of the page. As you are scrolling when the fader changes the page will jump.

Bigguy

Oh yeah, I saw it briefly. Tp is a good choice for replacement....anything would be really.

I think that's more of a coding issue cause of how the slider works. It adjusts for the size of the content but pushes the rest of the page down. It should remain at a specific size for all of the current content.

Think Bigguy had that same problem here, or over at WUB.  I hate using the news fader for this very reason, and tend to use the random news.  That way you see different news on page load and don't notice the page jump.

Also, when working on TP a few versions back I asked our devs if they could make our news block work when the news is turned off in the theme header, so now you can have the news display where you like. Gives it a whole new functionality, and can be used for news, banners, ads etc.  Only works for random news though unfortunately.

Skhilled

Yeah, you'd have to make transparent hr's or text or images for each things so they would all be the same height unless there's someway to force it to remain the same height.

Bigguy

I did have this problem...that's why I moved it to the bottom of the page. ;)

Ah! A smart one... LOL

You might want to post how you've done that for those that may need it. ;)

Bigguy

I will after my next update, which will be soon.

Looked at the code for the front page of that site and it's awful... blockquotes, random paragraph tags and using tables for layout. Unfortunately design/layout isn't something I'm all that skilled at so I did the best I could to keep it looking sort of the same on a test site... https://test.christianphotographers.com

Unfortunately digging through further I found that there are dozens of pages (due to all the devotionals - each one of those is a separate static page), so it's going to take a while to port all that over (I'll just use regular articles for the devotional stuff), and that assumes that everyone likes the proposed changes. I'm not entirely sure how many people are even aware that there's a website beyond the forum at this point, considering I found at least one link pointing to /yabbse, which hasn't been used since I migrated them to SMF 10+ years ago.

It looks a lot better for sure.

You will have to let me know if you want a theme making @Oldiesmann :)

Recreated another page on the test site...

Original: https://www.christianphotographers.com/files/purpose.html
New: https://test.christianphotographers.com/index.php?page=purpose

Need to adjust it some since SMF's CSS is getting in the way of that h1, but that shouldn't be too hard to get around.

A good start there Oldiesmann. ;)  Any reason for using an article for the main home page content rather than a front page block? Scratch that, I see that wasn't the home page.  :-[

Yep looking better and better @Oldiesmann

Got a couple more articles done. Had to work around a few quirks with whatever tidies up the HTML code (not sure if it's the WYSIWYG editor or something else), but I managed to get them looking similar to the original. Also added a category for all the devotionals and will add sub-categories for those. Should make it easier for people to find them, though I'll probably still keep the existing index pages as well.

My current plan for moving things:
Set up the articles on the test site first and get everything the way I want it there (so I can just copy code between sites and such)
Get a plan together for redirecting (for anything going to /community, I can just use a .htaccess to strip out the "/community" part of the URL and redirect to what's left; redirecting from pages in the main site will be a bit harder, though I'm trying to follow similar naming structures, so /files/devotionals.html will redirect to /index.php?page=devotionals for instance)
Move the site to the main directory, fix paths, replace EhPortal with TP
Copy over the articles, categories, etc.

It will take some time but the end result will be better than what they currently have.

You'd hope so ! Given the work involved.

I'm now thinking it might just be easier to do all the work on the regular site first, then move it and make the articles visible after moving (since TP lets you control who can see each category and such). Might be easier than trying to copy 70-something articles.

Went ahead and moved the site to TP. I decided it'll be much easier to just recreate the articles and everything on the live site (since I can control who can see what) than to build it all out on the test site and copy things over manually. Still need to figure out the random image thing (should be able to fix the code myself - just need time to work through it). Going to work on redoing the articles later.

The title bar issue you reported should now be fixed.  It will be included in the TP 1.6.4 along with some other fixes.  Meanwhile @rjen has attached a test install of 1.6.4 to your bug report topic, so you can get rid of the title bar.  ;)

Oldiesmann

I'll check that out when I get a chance.

On a related note, I decided to add a shoutbox to CP. I believe they had one years ago but I don't remember why we disabled it (I've been helping out with this site in one way or another for around 15 years so it's hard to remember all the changes that have taken place over the years :P).

I'll get started working on moving the pages over next week (gives me something to do at work when it's slow :P)
Christian Metal Fans - https://www.christianmetal.fans

Oldiesmann

Made a lot of progress already. I've already moved the following pages to articles:
Main page (not an article but a frontpage block)
Purpose page
Main devotionals page
"Songs of Worship" index page
All 55 "Songs of Worship" devotional pages
A biography page for one of the devotional authors (site owner's first husband)

Still to do:
"Walking in the Old Paths" index page and devotional pages (15 pages)
Testimonials index page and individual testimonial pages (8 pages)
Get redirects set up and test them
Move the site and enable all the articles (I'll do that with a database query so I don't have to manually enable 80+ articles)
Cleanup work (delete the old site files once redirects have been confirmed working, etc.)

I'm aiming for late July or early August for finishing this, mainly because I'm going on vacation for a week in three weeks and don't want to have to deal with potential site issues while I'm out of town

Upgraded the site to the latest versions of SMF and TinyPortal earlier. Going to look into finishing the articles as I mentioned here (I've been busy over the past 2½ years :P) and moving things Sunday night maybe (busy tomorrow)

Finally got a chance to move the forum to the main directory. The redirect from /community to / was easy thanks to Stack Overflow :P
Christian Metal Fans - https://www.christianmetal.fans

Oldiesmann

Enabled the front panel, added a site menu block and enabled all the articles.

I also discovered that TinyPortal is a bit odd. There are two separate settings for each article - one for whether it's active and one for whether it's approved. Apparently when I created all of these articles a couple years ago I never set them to approved, so none of them were showing up. I ended up going into phpMyAdmin and using an SQL query to mass approve all of them so I didn't have to go in and approve 50-something articles one at a time...

I see random image from SMF Gallery in your forum. How to add such block? There's no built-in Tinyportal block for that, I think.

There's code for that on the TinyPortal forum :)
