Then it was already in the public_html. I see you are at bytehost. If I remember correctly they use the url you have as the name for the public_html directory. So you did not have to move it.

What happen is that you tried to move the files to an addon or subdomain directory which is not allowed. Whenever you create a subdomain or addon domain it will create a directory with the name of the domain you are using. But you should not try to put anything in it.

What I don't get is what happened to the files and directories for the site. It should have kept them in the original one since that operation was not allowed.

You don't have a backup?

Are you using shared hosting or a VPS?

if you have a VPS do you have WHM?

It is possible that it moved the files elsewhere...maybe above /public_html?

I always use softaculous to install forums, why because it's easy.

When you use softaculous to install they never install into the public_html.

What I don't understand is why the files are not in either public_html or arcadeholics.net

No because there were already above the public_html

Your guest is as good as mine.

The files do show above the public_html, yet when you click on the main name it's empty.

It put them above /public_html...look at the directories in the image. ;)

You should never put a site above /public_html. You can put files that you don't want anyone to access there, however. But putting them there means no one can see them publicly. They must be under it in the main /public_html directory (which is not recommended) or put into a subdirectory like you had it. I.E., https://arcadeaholics.net/forum.

No, look at all of the directories in the last image he posted... Those are SMF, arcade, and mod directories...a lot of them. ;)

Steve arcadeholics.net was above the public_html in the first place, because the forum was installed using Softaculous.

Before they disappeared, I opened arcadeholics.net and clicked select all, then clicked move, when it opened to move it said to arcadeholics.net, it would not move them, got the error message, so I cleared arcadeholics.net from the box, the box is now empty, so I clicked move, figuring they were going into the public_html section. But instead they decided to fly to the moon.

He just said it wouldn't let him. But...the files are now right above /public_html.

I have Softaculous on my server and it never puts them there unless you specify it yourself during installation.

Skhilled

I see two option here...

1. Restore the backup.

2. Move the directories and files to a directory under /public_html in a separate subdirectory and run repair_settings.php to make everything sync so the world can see the site.

Never seen where it asked. But I do recall it say location or leave blank.

I even attempt to reinstall my sql backup and hell knows why it doesn't show up.
