I opened up a forum on phpBB 3.3, awful lot of work for upkeep, nothing is to easy on phpBB.

Is there anyone on here that can do a conversion to SMF 2.1.2 for me. and how much would it cost me?

https://seniorsgossip.com/index.php

Thanks
Ron.

Bigguy

Not to sure there is a converter yet for that.

* Bigguy wonders why you went with phpbb.

I found this converter, but I don't think it'll work. You would have to be on 2.0.19. There might be one in the works that I am not aware of though.

I think there is smf has a phpbb3 converter. I am wondering if it'll work also, because phpBB just had an upgrade from 3.3.7 tp 3.3.8.

I changed because I wanted to try something different.

Yep, the current converter to 2.0.19 is highlighted above.

There is a PR for 2.1 converters that folks are still testing here:

They can test it doing a conversion on my board, if they want. I am willing to chance it.

Ronald

I think for now, I'll stay with phpBB.  I installed a SMF 2.1.2 test board, put a couple of skins in and some mod's.

Now don't get me wrong here, smf is great and I have used it for many years, but the same problem is still hanging there. Mod's are outdated, a few new ones, a lot of mod's abandoned.

Quite a few mod's I wanted, I could not install due to incompatible, or abandoned. I just can't figure why you'd make a mod, then not keep it updated.

There are alot of reasons this may happen. SMF is good without mods and even better with them. I don't think Phpbb has a system like SMF does for modding.

Geoff I will say the modders at phpBB seem to keep things updated.

I did upgrade Arcadeholics to SMF 2.1.2

Bigguy

They keep them updated but are they not still manual edits or do they have something like a package manager. :???

Download the Ext. Open up your FTP to the location. Zip open the Ext select the name and slide it into the Ext you see on the FTP. After it installs go into the ACP and click on the Ext to activate it.
Works pretty good, but SMF is better and quicker.

Bigguy

So, half and half really. You still have some stuff to do manually.

Works are similar to smf mod's are called Ext and skins are called Style.

You zip the mod or style and click on name and install in either Ext or Stlye, then go into the ACP and click activate

Bigguy

But it still has to be uploaded manually, correct. :???

I guess so, you use the ftp or install via the cpanel

Bigguy

I would have thought they would have gotten over that hurdle ages ago.

They used to have a mod for installing mods via the admin that worked very well but the dev stopped updating it for unknown reasons.

I like phpBB but as Ron said, it does require a lot of work.

Bigguy

I remember that mod. I did try Phpbb once or twice but it had waay to much stuff in the admin panel for me. Just to much work, plus it just looked like overkill really.

Geoff, here is the proper convertor: https://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?converters;id=50 it is phpbb3 and converts you to SMF 2.0.1.9 from there I'd have to upgrade to 2.1.2

Your thoughts on doing this.

Bigguy

As long as all the database changes did what they were supposed to do I would think it could be done. :rgton

You willing to attempt to convert.?

If I made one forum, could just the members be brought over with there passwords.

I haven't done that in awhile. Would be fun to play around a bit though. Just not to sure what time I will have to do it.

That's very possible. it would need to be studied though before it was done.

OK give it some thought.

Bigguy

Certainly. I will check out some posts and such on other sites and see what problems, if any, people had.

I'd make a test site to try it on first to find any potential problems first. ;)

Is there a good tutorial explaining how to do this?

Skhilled

Well, there was one on my site...until I screwed it up! LMAO I was in a rush and forgot to uninstall my mods and themes first. :P

Basically, you should uninstall your mods and then your themes because most may not work with the upgraded version. Switch to the default theme and then backup your db and files.

Create a new db on the server and import your db backup to it and create a directory and upload your files to it. Upload upload repair_settings.php and run it. Make sure everything works as expected.

Then upgrade your smf as usual until you get the version you want. Reinstall your themes, if they will work with the new version. Reinstall your mods, if they will work with the new version.

Ronald

Dougie from SMF Support is going to convert phpbb 3.3 over to to SMF 2.0.1.9 for me.

Then I'll do the upgrade to SMF 2.1.2

I don't think you can convert directly to 2.1.2 yet.

Skhilled

Cool and no, you can do it directly, unfortunately.

Bigguy

Glad to hear it's getting done for you. :rgton

Doug has done the first part I am on smf 2.0.1.9 right now, next step is to upgrade to smf 2.1.2

Bigguy

That's great. It sounds like it's going good for ya. :rgton

All done, I did the final phase, did the upgrade to smf 2.1.2
