I like making pasta and still have a pasta machine that my grandmother bought when I was about 7 years old and it still works. However, I do prefer the ease of using my Kitchen Aid mixer attachments. LOL

I've made fresh sausage but it was only ground and not in casing. I have the tools to do it but I've always felt that ground was more versatile. One day, I'll try making links. LOL

I don't hunt but used to get meat from my dad who hunts and also a few friends.

Getting back to the Bob's site  ;D

I've done some testing this morning on my 2.0.19 site which we, Skhilled, Twitch and I use for looking at Crips old themes so we can compare the revamped 2.1 themes to the old versions.

At present the 2.0 theme is running on PHP8.0 to prove that I created a phpinfo.php file, attached, and added that to the root of the site I then ran the file (www.mysite.com/phpinfo.php) this showed me that the site is running on PHP8.0

After checking with my host I found out that there is no option for me to use PHP7.4 so I created a .htaccess file, attached, with the following code in it

<IfModule mime_module>
 AddHandler application/x-httpd-ea-php74 .php .php7 .phtml
</IfModule>

I uploaded the .htaccess file to the root of the site and then ran the phpinfo.php again and it showed me the site was on PHP7.4.

I do know that some mods from 2.0.19 and before will not run on anything higher than PHP7.4.

This might be a way forward for you to keep the site running on 2.0.19 Bob/Geoff without the need to upgrade to 2.1.

All this I suppose is dependant on whether Go Daddy has removed any legacy PHP versions, my host has left some there so maybe Go Daddy has also.

The files I used are in the attached zip, I had to do it that way as this site doesn't allow .htaccess files to be attached. See the images I took also

Good luck with it anyway

I still have PHP7.4 on my server because, Ken (who just passed away), and another forum still use 2.0.19. I plan to help the other user upgrade their forum then I can do away with all of the 7.0+ and 8.0 versions.

Thanks Dave, Bigguy, Skhilled,Everyone .
I downloaded the files to save . Just testing the waters here to see IF all or any Mods, Themes ,etc. I currently have working on my 2.0.19 sites will run in the 2.1 environment in the latest php prog.

Everything is fine for now however Go-Daddy and  many other HOSTS I assume are not using the older versions of php that run  older software. Go-Daddy IS allowing me to use the old versions and supporting it    BUT are going to  start CHARGING me a FEE to KEEP doing it when my Hosting  package renews in March I think .Just trying to see down the road.
I  guess my concern is IF I upgrade to 2.1 on  one of my sites to test mods and themes . WILL 2.1 work on the old php now running cuz IF I upgrade to the latest verion of php that MIGHT cause conflicts or even fuster cluck my other WORKING NOW  sites . Now I am willing to get another host ,move one of my older domains there ,install all the newest and greatest,msqyl,php,2.1.6 SMF package and my old MODS ,THEME, or their updated versions to test
if that is what it is gonna take

WOW ,my finger tips are going numb from Rambling on here .
Thanks in advance for you guys even listening

Dave

At present I have a 2.0.19 site running on PHP8.0 and a 2.1 site on the same host. The only potential issue is some old mods running on 8.0.

That's why I did the .htaccess test etc

PHP 7.3 has been EOL for a little over 4 years now. The extended support is technically something that cPanel (and Plesk, which shares a parent company with cPanel) is doing. Is there a particular reason you're not using a more current version of PHP? SMF 2.1 supports all the 8.x versions.

That is the whole Enchilada I DON'T know If my forums in  my current set up 2.0.19  and php 7.3 when updated to current php settings would function properly then updating to 2.1 would work  .  I realize updates are important for security, better functionality, new mods ,software etc but I want all my sites to Work exactly as they are as I like  they way they work is all .

As far as the themes go, if they are CipZone themes they may been already updated or will be.

Creating a test site is the best way to find out without actually messing with your current forum.

Thats kinda what I been leaning towards however just got to figure IF I want to try and use my existing HOST or get another completely different one and just move one of my domains I am not using and load an entire NEW FORUM with 2.0 then install all mods  then upgrade php to 8.0 then move everything to 2.1 and da dad da da to current php 8.4 and see how many progs still work ....... I make no money with all my domains and sites just have them to help others like you folks here do  but funds are limited thes days and I am hesitant of my skills these days . I can take off and land a 737,Gulfstream 3. Build old fuel injected Mercedes Restore Cars, Restore vintage Fishing Reels, Built all my computers over the years but lack the smarts anymore to take on the  tasks I am wanting to do ....lol
Not saying CAN'T just am a wee bit intimidated . You guys are a GREAT HELP in me getting there  and Thanks for not chewin my Head off with my non descriptive babble of terms.

If you plan on staying with your current hosting then do it there. Otherwise, another hosting may have different settings, PHP versions, etc. I do suggest using a separate domain, if you have a spare one because you can set that domain to a different PHP version. Each domain can only have one PHP version, that I'm currently aware of...

If you don't know how to create a test site, let me know. It should be an exact duplicate of your live site but all links should point to it and not your live site. Then, you can make any changes you like without affecting your live site. ;)

Another obstacle is I have Hell Navigating Go -Pappa"s
C-panel and workings . Plus I don't see HOW to update php for just One Website as it only shows to click on update and looks like all websites would automatically update ????

Yeah, GoDaddy's control panel is horrible.

That's what I was trying to tell you. You can only use one PHP version for one domain only. If you can use a separate domain while using GoDaddy then do that to create your test forum.

EDIT: Btw, you should always do regular backups. Especially, if you need to make a test site, etc. backup your database, your files and email separately, if you can. You may not need to backup your emails but your database and files are most important. ;)

That's what I've been trying to tell you Bob, although your host has the domain set on 8.3 you can set the website to PHP7.4 or up to PHP8.0 using the .htaccess option, it should work as they are letting people use the paid option so I don't see there will be an issue. If you have some time left on the current host then stay there use the .htaccess option and then change to a new host nearer the renewal time.

Also as long as you have enough resources usage left you could always install a test site.

To create a SMF2.1 website, firstly create a new database and call it 'Test'. In the root of your current site create a new folder and name it 'Test' or similar, upload SMF2.1.6 into to that folder and then go to that folder in your browser (www.mysite.com/Test) and follow the install instructions using the new database.
That way you can test the themes and mods you want to use without actually changing anything on your current site.

You could create a mirror image of your current site using the same option but there are more changes to be made that way like, saving a copy of your current database and then changing paths in it plus you would need to install a fresh version of SMF2.0.19 instead of 2.1.6.

I'm sure if Geoff is helping you he knows how to do that, once you've done it a few times it's easy enough to do
